Fools Haven Thatched Cottage

About

This gem of a thatched cottage is over 250 years old and is situated at the start of the Causeway Coast and Glens Route, opposite the Andrew Jackson Cottage on the shores of Belfast Lough. The Gobbins, a dramatic coastal walk, has reopened and is approximately a 20 minute drive from the Cottage or you could talk the train.

We are one and a half miles from historic Carrickfergus Castle, town, restaurants and leisure facilities. Five minutes' walk (or less) to the train, bus, post office and local shops.

We have been recognised at the annual NI Tourism Awards with the judges commenting on our attention to detail, providing unique and personal welcomes with locally sourced produce, and for paying special attention to guest's individual needs.

Ferry Ports and airports within an hours' travel by car or taxi. Linen, towels, oil heating and electric all included in price. Complimentary welcome tray on arrival - includes a selection of local produce. Private patio and picnic area for use by guests.

Fools Haven is where two local children, orphaned by the Titanic tragedy, were brought up. They had been sent to live with their Aunt while their Father sailed onboard the Titanic as an Engineer on that fateful maiden voyage to New York in April 1912. One of the children, Ruddick Millar, was honoured with the unveiling of a Historic Blue Plaque at Fools Haven Thatched Cottage in February 2012. Ruddick was a Titanic Orphan, Journalist, Author and Playwright 1907-1952.

We have a BBQ Cabin for guests to use - so rain, hail or snow you can have your BBQ as planned in Bettys Bothy. For those warm, sunny days enjoy sitting outside on the patio area. For the children we have Puffins Perch - a fun wooden Playhouse with toys – check out the photos.
