Glenarm Redspark Lamb Farm Tour
The Matthews family have been farming the Drumnagreagh downland since 1688. They’ve been slow rearing their black-faced Dorset sheep and perfecting their craft for centuries. Their sheep are free to roam the full heights of their farm, resulting in a lean and tender flavour. The sheep’s foraged diet blends sweet grasses, heather, and a dose of sea air to give Redspark lamb a flavour like no other.
Now its your turn to visit them for a tour of this working-family farm and a celebration of taste, history, and a long line of stewardship.
Backstage At The Farm
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a sheep farmer? Come along to an award winning coastal hill farm perched 800ft above sea level for a unique learning experience, led by owner Eamonn Matthews, who will guide you through the ins and outs of sheep farming today.
Hear about how the wonders of the surrounding natural coastal landscape, history and heritage of this special site shapes the farming process which makes the Glenarm Redspark Lamb Farm modern, low carbon and sustainable. Come and learn how this modern farmer is using traditional farming practices and processes to produce a highly sought after meat product.
Your guided tour will begin in the busy farmyard where Eamonn will give you a warm introduction to this 12th generation family farm, life as a sheep farmer and how the challenges of farming in such an environment gives each Glenarm Lamb cut of meat its Gold Award distinctive taste and texture.
The tour wouldn’t be complete without a chance to put theory into practice as you get a hands on experience handling and herding the beautiful native breeds of Scottish Blackface sheep, using an authentic shepherd’s crook, all whilst enjoying the stunning views across the Irish Sea towards Scotland. You will also get the opportunity to watch in awe the relationship between Eamonn and the farms sheepdogs, as they use their highly honed senses and skills to perform the commands given to them, whilst gathering the sheep.
As a reward for all the hard work carried out, each guest will be treated to a home cooked meal of either hearty lamb stew or a tasty BBQ chop accompanied by a range of local beverages and fresh baking straight from the farm kitchen.
