About
The award-winning Whitehead Railway Museum is a must-see for anyone with an interest in trains, railway heritage or local history. The five galleries include a signal box where you can pull the levers to change the signal. You can see the giants of steam close up and stroll through historic carriages including a dining car and the saloon in which the Queen travelled in 1953. Don't miss the viewing gallery overlooking the locomotive workshops where you can see restoration work in progress. You can step aboard the footplate of a 100-year-old steam locomotive and make believe you are the engine driver. Along the way, you will learn how railways facilitated social change and made travel accessible for everyone.
Throughout the museum there are information boards which interpret the items of rolling stock and the locomotives on display. Learn how a steam engine works and see a model engine sliced down the middle so that you can see what’s going on in the boiler. Historic engine nameplates and other signage from the railway era are on display.
The museum is wrapped around the workshops of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland which opened the museum in 2017. Refreshments are available in the Cups and Carriages tearoom within the museum. On September 14 admission to the museum is free.
In addition, the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland will also be operating pay-for steam train rides up and down its siding during the day. For more information and to book a train ride slot, please visit https://steamtrainsireland.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/873664179.
