"From Library to Museum: The Story of Larne Museum & Arts Centre - a talk by Marian Kelso

2 Victoria Road, Larne, County Antrim, BT40 1RN
Souvenir supplement from the Larne Times of the official opening of the Larne Carnegie Free Library (Larne Museum Archives)

About

This talk takes a look at the history of libraries in the town and finds out about the very first museum before looking at the building of Carnegie Free Library and the development of Victoria Road.

Through the talk you will discover how the formation of Larne and District Folklore Society lead to the development of the town's second museum. Joint ventures by the Society and Larne and District Historical Centre lead to events such as the Bruce Cavalcade and the re-enactments of the Hiring Fairs.

The talk then looks at more recent developments in the museum and explores some elements of the museum's collection.

The talk includes historic images of the town and video footage.

This talk is taking place as part of European Heritage Open Days 2024.

This is a free event, however places are limited and should be booked in advance by contacting Larne Museum & Arts Centre on 028 28 262443 or by e-mailing marian.kelso@midandeastantrim.gov.uk.
