About
Drumalis in Larne is an impressive example of a Victorian Country House, retaining the grandeur of its original setting with fine interior notably the inlaid woodwork and stained glass by George Henry Walton (3 June 1867 Glasgow – 10 December 1933 London), a noted Scottish architect and designer of remarkable diversity. Drumalis remains his most complete surviving company job.
The house was built by Sir Hugh Houston Smiley, 1st Baronet in 1872 and added to in stages right up to his death in 1909. It was subsequently bought by the Sisters of the Cross and Passion in 1930 and has been run as a retreat and conference centre since then, "a place of welcome... an oasis on the journey of life."
Visitors on the Open Day can enjoy guided tours of the heritage building which will be ongoing throughout the afternoon. There is no need to book in advance. In addition to the building, Drumalis has beautiful grounds to explore including the restored Victorian Rose Garden and guests will be welcome to discover them at their leisure.
Sweet or savoury afternoon teas will be available in the Dining Room (additional charge) and there will also be craft activities for children
