About

Located just under a mile from Carrickfergus town centre, off Larne Road, the Andrew Jackson Cottage offers a fascinating journey into Ulster-Scots history. Built in the 1750s by the Donaldson family, this traditional thatched farmhouse is one of the few remaining examples of the cottages constructed when lowland Scots settlers arrived in southeast Antrim. The family lived in the cottage until 1979, after which it was sold to Carrickfergus Borough Council and restored to reflect its original 18th-century state.

The cottage features an authentic open fireplace with a daub and wattle canopy, hanging crane, and original furnishings including a dresser, spongeware crockery, and iron pots, creating an immersive experience of life in Ulster-Scots rural communities. Although the original Jackson cottage was demolished in 1860 to accommodate the expanding railway, the current site has been meticulously reconstructed to honor this legacy.

Inside the cottage, visitors will discover an exhibition dedicated to Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States, who was born in the nearby area in 1767. The exhibit showcases his life, career, and the strong links between this humble home in Boneybefore and the White House. Jackson’s parents emigrated to America in 1765, but their roots remain embedded in this historical setting.

The site also houses the US Rangers Centre, a museum honoring the elite American Army unit that was first activated in Carrickfergus in 1942. Visitors can explore documents, uniforms, photographs, and other artifacts that chronicle the Rangers' training and combat during World War II. These brave soldiers, who trained alongside British Commandos, played a pivotal role in campaigns such as the North Africa invasion. Today, close ties remain between the museum and the US Rangers, with visits from former and current members, including prominent military officers.

For those exploring the grounds, a short walk will lead to a blue plaque marking the site of the original Jackson homestead, about 50 meters west of the cottage.
